Polishing process for Resin

This page introduces TDC’s polishing process for resin materials. For information on TDC’s polishing services, please also refer to “Polishing Services”.

TDC’s Polishing process for Resin

TDC specializes in the polishing of various engineering plastics, polyimides, Teflon, and other resins through the development of proprietary technologies and the polishing techniques we have cultivated over the years. We can handle the polishing of parts and components made of resin materials that require high precision.

For TDC’s polishing process, please refer to the “Polishing Process” page.

Features of TDC’s resin polishing process

TDC’s resin polishing process has the following strengths and features.

  • High-precision polishing
Our precision polishing technology enables ultra-high-precision metal precision machining at the micron and nano-level by controlling the amount of removal. Compared to machining methods such as cutting and grinding, TDC can handle any shape without placing a load on the object.
  • Quick delivery and express delivery are possible.
With more than 100 polishing machines, we can provide quick delivery even for large lots and complex processing.
For urgent cases, we can also provide “express response” services.
  • Please feel free to contact us for
small lot orders from one piece, or for prototype production.
  • Owns a wide variety of over 100 processing
TDC owns over 100 processing machines such as lapping and polishing machines, surface grinders, and other polishing equipment.
We also have a variety of CNN, milling machines, and other machining equipment to handle all types of processing.
About half of the more than 100 polishing machines are manufactured in-house, enabling “low cost” and “high quality” manufacturing.

Example of resin material that can be polished by TDC

The following are examples of resin materials that can be polished by TDC.

  • Various engineering plastics
  • polyimide
  • Teflon (PTFE)

Example of TDC’s resin polishing process

The following are four typical examples of resin polishing processes at TDC.

Example of Resin Polishing Process (1): Polyimide adsorption plate

  • Material: Polyimide
  • Size: 200 mm dia.
  • Processing details: Mirror finish by lapping and polishing
  • Accuracy: Surface roughness Ra 1 nm or less, flatness 0.02 mm

Example of Resin Polishing Process (2): Mirror-finish test piece production for various types of resin

  • Material: Various resins
  • Size: Available in your requested size.
  • Processing: High-precision mirror-finish substrates are produced using polishing methods appropriate to the material.
  • Accuracy: Click here for our surface roughness results.

Example of Resin Polishing Process (3): Teflon Bore Inner Diameter Mirror Finish

  • Material: Teflon/PTFE (engineering plastic)
  • Size: 10 mm O.D. x 5 mm I.D.
  • Processing details: The inside diameter is finished to a mirror surface by our self-developed polishing equipment.
  • Accuracy: Surface roughness Ra 5 nm or less

Example of Resin Polishing Process (4): PEEK High Precision Shim Manufacturing

  • Material: PEEK (engineering plastic)
  • Size: 70 mm x 70 mm x 0.5 mm
  • Machining details: Precision lapping and grinding to a thickness of 0.5±0.0005 to produce a high-precision shim.
  • Accuracy: thickness = 0.5 mm±0.0005 mm (0.5 um)

What is resin?

Resins are plant-derived substances with fat-like properties, and are broadly classified into two types: natural resins and synthetic resins. Natural resins include “lacquer” and “pine resin,” but resin materials treated as objects of machining generally refer to “synthetic resins. Synthetic resins include materials such as acrylic, polyvinyl chloride, engineering plastics, polyimide, and Teflon as resin materials.

Acrylic

Acrylic, one of the most well-known resin materials, is famous for its durability and high transparency among plastics. As can be seen from the fact that huge aquarium tanks are composed of acrylic resin, the main characteristics of this material are its excellent pressure and impact resistance.

(Poly) vinyl chloride

Vinyl chloride is the common name for polyvinyl chloride or vinyl chloride resin. Characteristics include stability to maintain strength over long periods of time, durability to resist deterioration, adhesiveness, and flame resistance.

Engineering plastics

Engineering plastic (engineering plastic) is a generic term for synthetic resins with high heat resistance and improved mechanical strength for use under harsh industrial conditions. The performance of plastic has been dramatically improved from the image of “plastic is brittle and easily cracked,” and it is in an intermediate/complementary position between metal parts and general-purpose plastic parts, realizing lighter weight and lower cost.

Polyimide

Polyimide refers to a super engineering plastic developed by DuPont of the United States. It has extremely high heat resistance compared to other organic and polymer materials, and is mainly used as an insulating base material for electronic circuit materials.

Teflon/PTFE

Teflon/PEFE is mainly used for industrial purposes, but is also famous for fluorine coating of frying pans. It is mainly used for industrial purposes, but is also famous for fluorine coating of frying pans.

It is difficult to polish resin materials.

Resin polishing is generally considered more difficult than metal polishing. One of the reasons for this is the softness of the resin material. It is considered difficult in that the amount of polishing is large, and rework is not allowed. Another reason for the difficulty is that it is sensitive to heat, and the surface melts or discolors due to increased friction.
